Working together with Elite Swimming Academy, the school was able to secure the future of our swimming pool with a major refurbishment in 2015. The treasured swimming pool, funded and built by the Barrow village community over 50 years ago now, is now used by both ESA and the school with a much expanded capacity to deliver weekly programs of high-quality swimming lessons.
The children at Barrow enjoy the benefit of year round swimming lessons as part of our PE provision. For the academic year 2023/24, all classes will once again have a weekly swimming lesson across three of the six half terms of the year. This spread across the year will allow teachers to cover all of the PE requirements in a very broad curriculum.
Every child will need to have a suitable swimming kit in school, along with their usual PE kit, in the half term that they are scheduled to swim. For girls this will be a one-piece swimsuit and for boys, swimming trunks or swimming shorts. All children are required to wear a swimming cap. Googles may also be used but these are not essential. Swimming kit and towels will need to be clearly named and supplied in a separate bag.
At Barrow Primary School a key focus of the use of our PE and Sports Premium funding is to provide swimming lessons for all children across the school.
We have signed up to the ‘School Swimming Charter’ and are in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the national governing body for swimming in England. Membership of the ASA scheme has enabled us to provide rewards and recognition for the children’s swimming achievements in school.
During their school swimming lessons, each child will now be working towards achieving eight different levels of ‘School Swimming Award’. Each has a badge, certificate and sticker which will be awarded when a level has been assessed as achieved by the teachers in school. Having started working on the awards over the last few weeks, the children who have been swimming this half term are now being awarded the first certificates and badges.
The swimming pool at Barrow if also available for other schools and organisations to let and further details can be obtained at the school office or website. Our pool is also available weekends and school holidays for private hire.
