At Barrow CEVC Primary School, we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all children, including those living with allergies.
Allergies can range from mild reactions to anaphylaxis, which is a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. We therefore take allergy awareness and the management of allergens very seriously.
We aim to be an allergy-aware school. It is not possible to guarantee that our school environment will be completely free from allergens, but we take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of children coming into contact with their known allergens.
We ask all members of our school community to support us by following any allergy-related guidance provided by the school and by being particularly careful when food is brought onto the school site.
Parents and carers should tell us about any known or suspected allergy and keep the school informed of any changes to their child's condition, medication or treatment.
Children with allergies are supported according to their individual needs. Where appropriate, this includes an Individual Healthcare Plan and/or Allergy Action Plan, agreed with parents or carers and informed by appropriate healthcare advice.
We work with families and our catering providers to manage food allergies and special dietary requirements safely.
Children who have been prescribed adrenaline devices should have access to their prescribed medication while at school. Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring that the school has the medication and information required to support their child and that prescribed medication is in date.
In accordance with current statutory requirements, the school also holds spare emergency adrenaline devices for use in appropriate emergency circumstances.
Staff receive allergy-awareness training so that they understand how to recognise an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, and how to respond in an emergency.

Children with allergies should be able to participate fully in school life, with appropriate planning and reasonable adjustments made to manage risk safely.
