Our Sustainability
Journey at Barrow
Discover how sustainability is part of life at Barrow — from our two-year programme and six key drivers, to how it connects with our Christian vision, values and everyday school experiences.

THIS TERM
Biodiversity & Nature Recovery
This term, pupils focus on biodiversity and caring for God’s creation. Children explore habitats, support wildlife, and take part in practical activities such as planting, creating habitats, and improving outdoor spaces. Through this, we develop a sense of stewardship, responsibility and wonder for the natural world.

TWO-YEAR ROLLING PROGRAMME
How the cycle works
Our sustainability programme follows a simple two-year rolling cycle, with a clear focus each term. This allows pupils to explore each theme in a meaningful way, linking learning, assemblies and practical action across the school. Each driver is revisited over time so children can build understanding, confidence and responsibility as they progress through Barrow.

DOCUMENTS & UPDATES
A place to grow over time
This page will develop as our sustainability journey grows. Over time, it will share our Climate Action Plan, termly updates, pupil-led projects and examples of how we are making a difference across school life. We will use this space to celebrate progress, share learning and show how our whole school community is working together to care for our world.
Our Class Sustainability Pledges
At Barrow CEVC Primary School, every class has made a sustainability pledge to help protect nature, support wildlife and care for our school environment. From Reception’s first steps in noticing living things to Year 6 leading and inspiring change, each year group has chosen practical actions that make a positive difference.
Our class pledges encourage pupils to learn about biodiversity, recycling, habitats, pollinators, wildlife and environmental responsibility. Through hands-on projects across the school grounds, children are developing the knowledge, confidence and care needed to look after the natural world now and in the future.

Reception’s Pledge
We notice and care for nature
Reception are beginning their sustainability journey by learning to notice, care for and respect the natural world around them. Their pledge focuses on simple, meaningful actions that help children understand that even the youngest pupils can make a difference.
The children will help care for class planters, go on weekly minibeast hunts, build a simple bug hotel and plant flowers to attract bees and butterflies. Through these hands-on activities, Reception pupils will begin to recognise living things, understand basic habitats and learn how small acts of care can support wildlife in our school grounds.

Year 1’s Pledge
We help living things grow
Year 1 are pledging to help living things grow by caring for plants, flowers and pollinators around the school. Their sustainability work encourages responsibility, observation and a love of the natural world.
The children will plant seeds and flowers in pots, create a watering rota, observe how plants change over time and learn about important pollinators such as bees and butterflies. By taking part in these activities, Year 1 will develop an understanding of basic life cycles and how their care and attention can help nature thrive.

Year 2’s Pledge
We create homes for wildlife
Year 2 are focusing on creating safe and welcoming homes for wildlife. Their pledge helps pupils understand that animals and insects need suitable habitats to survive, grow and flourish.
The children will build and maintain a bug hotel, look after wildlife homes, observe the animals and insects that visit, and record which insects they find. These activities will help Year 2 learn about habitats, biodiversity and the importance of protecting small creatures within our school environment.

Year 3’s Pledge
We look after our school environment
Year 3 are taking practical steps to care for the school environment and understand the impact of everyday human actions. Their pledge focuses on keeping the school grounds clean, reducing waste and improving shared outdoor spaces.
The children will carry out regular litter picks, start or maintain a compost bin, sort waste and learn about recycling. They will also improve a small area of the school grounds to make it more attractive and beneficial for nature. Through this work, Year 3 will see how responsible choices can make a positive environmental difference.

Year 4’s Pledge
We grow and protect biodiversity
Year 4 are pledging to grow and protect biodiversity by creating habitats, planting wildflowers and monitoring wildlife around the school. Their work encourages pupils to think carefully about ecosystems and the links between plants, animals and their environment.
The children will create a new hedgehog home, plant wildflowers and record what grows, and monitor wildlife in the school wildlife area. By observing birds, insects, amphibians and mammals, Year 4 will develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems, habitats and the importance of biodiversity.

Year 5’s Pledge
We care for nature and create safe habitats
Year 5 are pledging to care for nature by mapping habitats, creating safe spaces for insects and thinking carefully about improvements to the school grounds. Their work encourages pupils to investigate, plan and make environmentally responsible choices.
The children will map habitats around the school, create pallet bug hotels, research environmentally friendly materials and design improvements for the school grounds. This pledge supports practical learning, teamwork and problem-solving, helping Year 5 understand that small actions can make a big difference to wildlife and sustainability.

Year 6’s Pledge
We lead and inspire change
Year 6 are taking on a leadership role in the school’s sustainability work. Their pledge focuses on inspiring others, raising awareness and leaving a positive environmental legacy for the whole school community.
The children will act as biodiversity champions, lead assemblies or campaigns about protecting nature, support younger classes with their projects and create a legacy project such as a garden area or awareness campaign. Through this work, Year 6 will develop leadership, advocacy and teamwork skills while helping to create lasting change across the school.
